ANALYSIS OF ECE R55, R147, AND R102: EU TYPE-APPROVAL OF MECHANICAL COUPLING DEVICES AND COMPONENTS

ANALYSIS OF ECE R55, R147, AND R102: EU TYPE-APPROVAL OF MECHANICAL COUPLING DEVICES AND COMPONENTS

RELEASE DATE:2022-07-11 12:09
BriefTo ensure the safety requirements and international interchangeability of standard and non-standard mechanical coupling devices and components, ECE R55 rules the requirements for the devices and which are used for vehicles in categories M, N and O,  R147 specifies the requirements for the devices used for in categories T, R or S (agricultural and forestry vehicles) and R102 applies for closely coupled devices (CCD).

SCOPE

Reg No.Scope
ComponentsVehicles
R55
R55 applies to the mechanical coupling devices and components devices and components listed below used for motor vehicles and trailers intended to form a ‘Combination of Vehicles’ or ‘Articulated Vehicles’:
Class A  Coupling balls and towing brackets
Class B  Coupling heads
Class C  Clevis type drawbar coupling
Class D  Drawbar eyes
Class E  Non-standard drawbars
Class F  Non-standard draw beams
Class G  Fifth wheel couplings
Class H  Fifth wheel coupling pins
Class J  Non-standard mounting plates
Class K  Standard hook type couplings
Class L  Standard toroidal drawbar eyes for use with appropriate Class K
Class S  Other coupling devices
Class T  Dedicated drawbar type couplings
Class W  Non-standard miscellaneous, automatic drawbar coupling clevis type
Vehicles  with regard to the fitting of a mechanical coupling device or component pursuant to Regulation No. 55
R102Close-coupling device (CCD)Vehicles of category
R147
R147 applies to the mechanical coupling devices and components used for vehicles of category T, R or S (agricultural vehicles) intended to form a ‘Combination of Vehicles’:
Class a80  Coupling ball 80 and keeper plate
Class b80  Coupling head 80
Class c40  Clevis-type drawbar couplings
Class d40-1  Drawbar eyes 40 (nominal thickness:30,5 mm)connecting to clevis-type couplings
Class d40-2  Drawbar eyes 40 (nominal thickness:42 mm)connecting to clevis-type couplings
Class d50  Toroidal drawbar eye 50 connecting to a hitch hook (class g) or a piton-type coupling (class h)
Class e  Non-standard drawbars
Class f  Non-standard towing frames
Class g  Hitch hooks
Class h  Piton-type couplings with a keeper plate
Class i  Tractor drawbar couplings
Class j  Drawbar eyes which connect to a tractor drawbar (class i)
Class q  Clevis-type drawbar couplings non-swivel around longitudinal axis
Class r  Drawbar eye connection with non-swivel clevis type couplings (class q)
Class s  Other coupling devices and components
Agricultural vehicles with regard to the fitting of a mechanical coupling device or component
Note:  Some non-standard coupling devices are the combination of various components, for example, the R55 certificate for Calss S-other coupling devices and the R55 certificate for Class D50-Drawbar eyes are both required for one specific manual coupling. And the requirements of some national standards shall be taken into consideration.

TESTING REQUIREMENTS
R55: Dynamic Durability Test, Static Test (if any)
R147: Dynamic Durability Test, Static Test (if any)
R102: CCD Recovery Distance Test, Stability of the Combination Test, Circular Movement Test, Slopes Inspection
