BRIEF ANALYSIS OF FIELD OF VISION ASSISTANT FROM UN R125

Brief: In “Mission: Impossible 4”, the BMW i8W driven by Tom Cruise with a map across the front windshield, impressed us a lot at the time. The in-car Heads Up Display (HUD) has formed a piece of the puzzle for most people's concept of the "future car". HUD began as a way to assist pilots’ vision. Today more and more manufacturers (e.g. BMW, Mercedes, Audi, etc.) are providing their vehicles with HUD systems, while separate HUD projection devices can also be bought online. Yet with all the developments in automotive technology nowadays, why there is still only have very limited information in the common HUD displays on the market? Is it possible to adjust the  information provided from HUD to anywhere on the windshield?

The UNECE regulation 125.02 started to regulate this kind of HUD in the driver's front field of view. This  kind of information was defined as visual contents displayed on the vehicle windscreen or other glazed surface to support the awareness of the driver, the Field of Vision Assistant (FVA). From 1 September, 2023, manufacturers need to apply 02 series of R125 to authority.


WHICH AREAS CAN FVA COVER? 
The transparent field of vision in windscreen may be overlaid by FVA. The provisions of information display below are applying to FVA overlaid outside above and on the sides of area S defined as below.

The S-area is the area of the windshield determined based on the reference point, as shown in the figure below:

WHAT INFORMATION CAN BE DISPLAYED IN FVA?
1.When the ignition is on or the vehicle master control switch is activated (whichever is applicable), the FVA information shall be driving related only and limited to items listed below:

Oncoming Traffic Jam/vehicle break down
Vehicles leaving the lane or entering the own driving path
Warning/highlight vulnerable road users or other road users which may be overseen

Cyclists
Crossing road users
Road users in blind spot or road users covered by other objects
Animals
Information to maintain the distances to surrounding road user and infrastructure

Distance to vehicle in front
Lane keep assist, lane change assist, speed limits changes
Information to find and maintain the correct driveway and to follow the road instructions


Navigation Information, symbols and arrows during automatic lane change
(Directions, Remaining distance to target, border crossings)
Highlighting stop lines and pedestrian crosswalks
Information to support driver’s setting
Highlighting edges of the position of the FVA area during adjustment

2. As long as the parking gear/brake has not been released for the first time after the activation of the vehicle master control switch, the information displayed by the FVA may be non-driving related (e.g. entertainment information, self-test information displayed by regular instruments). Otherwise, the 1st provision must be met.
3. The symbols and graphics shown by the FVA shall disappear when the underlying condition for their display does not exist anymore. 

FVA CONTROL
1.It shall be possible for the driver to switch off the FVA by a deliberate action consisting of at least one manual option with maximum of 2 consecutive steps.
2.It shall be possible for the driver to adjust the light intensity of the FVA. 
3.The FVA shall be deactivated automatically in case of an electrically detectable failure of the FVA that affects the visual information as an identified risk considered in the safety approach(such as failure in deactivating the FVA results in failure to meet the above requirements for displaying visual information).
