RELEASE DATE:2022-12-09 10:59
Brief: The requirements of UN R158 Rear-view and Detection Systems are mandatory for all unlimited series new types of vehicles exported to the EU market from July 6, 2022.This article briefly introduces the main technical requirements and test methods of Rear-view camera system (RVCS) and rear detection systems (Detection Systems) commonly used in automobiles in R158.

GENERAL
1.During a backing event at least one means of rear visibility or detection shall be provided to the driver. Possible means are: Direct vision, Close Proximity Rear-view Mirror, Rear-View Camera System, Detection System
2.Backing event starts when the vehicle is in Active vehicle mode and the vehicle's direction selector is placed into reverse,
Backing event ends when the vehicle's direction selector is not placed in reverse or the vehicle is moving forward.
REQUIREMENTS FOR REAR-VIEW CAMERA SYSTEM (RVCS)
1.Default view
The RVCS must default to the rear-view image at the beginning of each backing event regardless of any modifications to the field of view that the driver has previously selected.
2.Response time for RVCS
The rear-view image shall be provided after a maximum of 2.0 seconds after start of the backing event.
3.Field of vision
The requirements of the regulations on the field of view are shown in figure A. The shaded part in figure a is the horizontal field of view of the observation area, and the black circle is the test cylinder. The size and illustration of the cylinder are shown in the small side picture. The detection ability is verified by using a cylinder, and the following requirements must be met.
a. For the cylinders in the first row :Color block 0.15 m x 0.15 m area or the top of the cylinder shall be visible at least one position on each cylinder.
b. For the cylinders in the second row and the third row:The whole cylinder shall be seen.

4.View size
The regulations not only stipulate the display range of the reversing image, but also clearly stipulate the minimum requirements for the display size of the reversing image, which is convenient for the driver to identify.
The image detected in Figure a is displayed on the display screen in the car. When the driver looks directly at the screen (as shown in Figure D), the size of the 0.15m2 color block on the last row of cylinders in the reversing image (as shown in Figure C) is the size of the screen image It needs to meet the two requirements of (a) and (b). It can be simply understood as showing how many arc minutes the image of the size of the color block on the cylinder occupies on the screen of the driver:
a. All three cylinders at the last row shall average not less than 5 minutes of arc; and
b. Each individual cylinders shall not be less than 3 minutes of arc.

REQUIREMENTS FOR DETECTION SYSTEM
1.Display requirements
The system shall have at least two kinds of information signal selected from audible, optical, and haptics.
2.Response time for detection systems
At least one of the audible or haptic information signals, shall be given to the driver within a maximum of 0.6 seconds after the start of the backing event, when tested according to paragraph 2. of Annex 10
3.Field of detection
The regulations have clear requirements for the detection capability of the detection system in a specific detection area. The regulations propose two detection test methods. Due to the cost of test layout and test cycle, the simplified test method in Annex 10, 1.4. is generally used. The schematic diagram is as Figure E ,
The dots in the area are the measured objects - cylinders, and it is required that all the columns can be detected by the system in the scene layout test.
Different types of systems (ultrasonic-based systems and radar-based systems) have different detection capabilities. Under the same test scene layout, cylinders placed in this area have different diameter requirements.
a.Ultrasonic detection system Cylinder material: wood/metal/hard plastic Cylinder diameter d=75mm L=1m (quote ISO17386:2010.7.1)
b. Radar detection system Cylinder material: metal Cylinder diameter d=25mm L=1m (quote ISO 17386:2010.7.1)
