Vehicle Type Approval
The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) is responsible for the certification of motor vehicles in Nepal, and is comprised of Transport Management Offices and Vehicle Fitness Test Centre. The Transport Management Offices are located in all districts of Nepal and are responsible for the registration of motor vehicles, while the Vehicle Fitness Test Center is the motor vehicle laboratory that completes motor vehicle performance tests in conjunction with the DoTM.
Specifically, the DoTM is responsible for the development of all vehicle regulations and management systems, as well as the type approval of road vehicles and the management of after-market inspections of private vehicles and public transport. In addition, the Ministry of Forests and Environment (MFE) oversees legislation on motor vehicle exhaust pollution. A model has to comply with DoTM certification and emissions certification before it can be officially used on local roads.
