ATV Certification
All-Terrain Vehicle or ATV means any motorized off-highway vehicle designed to operate on 3 or 4 wheels, using four low-pressure or non-pneumatic tires, with a seat designed to be straddled by the operator, and with handlebars for steering control.

ATVs are divided into Type I, II types: 
Type I: for single person use only, no passenger
  • Class G General Purpose ATV: for persons 16 years of age or older (recreational/utility)
  • Class S Sport ATV: for experienced operators 16 years of age and older (recreational)
  • Category Y Youth ATV: for young people under 16 years of age (recreational)
  • Class T Transitional ATV: for operators 14 or 15 years old under adult supervision or 16 years old or older(recreational)

Type II: for operator or operator and passenger use (up to one passenger)
Class G General Purpose ATV: for operators 16 years of age and older (recreational/utility)

Vehicle manufacturers and importers are also authorized by the NHTSA to manage the importation of vehicles, vehicle safety parts, and vehicle identification numbers that are allowed or intercepted by the NHTSA.

Specialty Vehicle Institude of America
The ATV Safety Institute® (ASI), a not-for-profit division of the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America® (SVIA), was formed in 1988 to implement an expanded national program of all-terrain vehicle (ATV) safety education and awareness. SVIA has developed the latest national standard requirements for all-terrain vehicles - ANSI/SVIA 1-2023.

Consumer Product Safety Commission
Consumer Product Safety Commission is a federal agency under the U.S. Federal Law "Consumer Product Safety Act", directly under the jurisdiction of the President of the United States, to carry out the quality of homemade or imported products sold in the United States safety inspection. CPSC is involved in the development of design standards for ATVs imported into the U.S. by the Specialty Vehicle Association (SVIA), as well as the monitoring and recall of ATVs in the marketplace.
